Our Perfume Houses

Close to 300 new perfume brands launch every year. Many of them call themselves niche, but the word, which is supposed to stand for originality, quality and creative vision, has been worn thin. Too many brands ride the trends, copy whatever is selling, or dress themselves in a thin coat of rarity for one purpose only: profit. H Parfums has existed since 2017 to do it differently. Every house below is one we chose, met, and whose work we defend. Close to half of them you will not find anywhere else in Canada. They come from France, Italy, Japan, Vietnam, England, Monaco, and from Montreal itself. Come and smell them in our Outremont boutique at 5064 rue Hutchison in Montreal, or order samples online.

Affinessence

Sophie Bruneau created Affinessence around a radical idea: remove the olfactory pyramid. Her Base Notes collection is built exclusively from the most complex and most precious materials, the ones whose high molecular weight makes them intense and tenacious. A world first in the history of perfumery. “Our budget is unlimited: I want the best raw materials to get the best products.”

Aphorismes by Dominique Ropion

by Dominique Ropion·6 references

Dominique Ropion. Master perfumer at IFF. The creative mind behind Ysatis and Amarige for Givenchy, Dune and Pure Poison for Dior, La Vie est Belle for Lancôme, Alien for Mugler. He is nicknamed the Stanley Kubrick of perfumery for his art of contrast. With Aphorismes, his first personal collection, he delivers a body of work free of any commercial constraint: each fragrance is built to capture a timeless truth about one of the great families or materials of perfumery. The way an aphorism distills an essential idea into a few chosen words.

Atelier Materi is a French creative house that has chosen honest luxury. No excess. Inspired by the raw beauty of materials, founder Véronique Le Bihan brings a modern vision to artisanal know-how. Bastille

Conscious French perfumery·9 references

Bastille came out of an observation. Clean cosmetics dominate the trends, but natural perfumes often stay rough and unsophisticated. Bastille’s challenge? Make perfumes that are natural and elegant at the same time. Each fragrance is composed of 95% natural ingredients and 5% safe synthetic molecules, with no endocrine disruptors, no parabens, no phthalates, no dyes and no UV filters. Vegan, made in France, radically transparent.

d'Annam

by Nick Hoang·21 references

D’Annam is Nick Hoang’s waking dream. A Vietnamese artisanal house born from the wish to share the scents of his home country. “The lotus flowers that bloomed on our lakes, the smell of morning dew on the rice fields, the bitterness of lemongrass leaves in my grandmother’s garden: every smell is a thread in the weave of my memories.” Chapter 1, Vietnam Enchanté, weaves a sensory story where white rice, strong coffee and local flowers follow one another like a fresco of childhood. Chapter 2, Souvenir du Japon, reinterprets Japanese delicacy: cherry blossom, Hinoki cypress, velvety matcha. Chapter 3, Majestic China, opens onto the immense, luminous landscapes of China, cradle of civilisations thousands of years old: calligraphy, the Silk Road, peony and white lotus. A 100% vegan house, produced in small batches, which received two distinctions at the 2025 Art & Olfaction Awards in only its second year.

ÉDIT(h)

by Kentaro Kuzuwa·9 references

Japan, 1905. In the Nikko Jirushi workshop, artisans shape shuniku, the red ink of official seals, in air steeped in resinous essences from across Asia. A hundred and twenty years later Kentaro Kuzuwa, sixth-generation heir and former music director, turns those ancestral aromas into perfume. “ÉDIT(h) is not a Western copy. It is the continuing autobiography of my family’s history.” The fragrances, the materials and the production methods draw directly on more than a century of expertise developed at Nikko Jirushi. The hanko, the Japanese seal, becomes an olfactory signature. Not only a perfume: a gesture, a mark.

Fascent

by Fanny Fortin and Edwina Réthoré·17 references

Fascent, a contraction of facets and scent, is a young French house we met at Paris Perfume Week 2026. Fanny Fortin has made olfaction her playground. A business school graduate, she worked at Guerlain, Carven, CPL Aromas and Firmenich. Edwina Réthoré completes the pair with a hybrid path between iconic houses (Le Labo, LVMH, Diptyque) and disruptive digital brands. Together they decided to take apart the assumptions that tie niche perfumery to elitism and high prices. Colourful, unpretentious, modular, made to last.

Filippo Sorcinelli perfumes at H Parfums, Montreal

Filippo Sorcinelli

by Filippo Sorcinelli·18 references

Trained as an organist, with a degree from the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music, and founder of the LAVS atelier, Laboratorio Atelier Vesti Sacre, which makes the liturgical garments of the Vatican. He has dressed popes Benedict XVI, Francis and Leo XIV, as well as the priests of Notre-Dame de Paris, of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and of St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. He never shipped a sacred garment without slipping into the parcel a veil steeped in his LAVS incense, lavishly overdosed with black pepper. His fragrances explore art, the sacred and the human condition as olfactory works more than as perfumes. Every creation carries a poetic, artistic or mystical dimension, from the incense of churches to the earthy, carnal notes that carry the liturgy onto the skin.

Frapin perfumes at H Parfums, Montreal

Frapin

Since 1270, with David Frossard·14 references

Settled in the south-west of France since 1270, the Frapin family has grown vines and then distilled for 21 generations, and owns a 240-hectare estate in Grande Champagne. The Frapin perfumes, created with perfume designer David Frossard, are a house in their own right, but drawn from the same source: the cognac estate, its eaux-de-vie, its barrels and its art of living. The beechwood caps, shaped by a craftsman, echo the barrels that give cognac its flavour. The quill on the logo is a tribute to Rabelais, an ancestor of the family.

Houbigant perfumes at H Parfums, Montreal

Houbigant

Since 1775·21 references

Paris, 1775. Jean-François Houbigant, twenty-three years old, opens a shop at 57 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré under the sign À la Corbeille de Fleurs. A master glover-perfumer, he makes and sells perfumes, powders, pomades and gloves there. His compositions soon scent the royal palaces and Houbigant becomes the official perfumer of the European courts. The house created Le Bouquet de la Tsarine in honour of the Empress Maria Feodorovna. In 1882 master perfumer Paul Parquet composed Fougère Royale there: the first fragrance to use a synthetic isolate, coumarin extracted from the tonka bean, giving birth to a whole olfactory family, the fougères. The only perfume house to have lived through four centuries. Without Houbigant, modern perfumery would not exist.

Jeroboam perfumes at H Parfums, Montreal

Jeroboam

by François Hénin·16 references

In the beginning was Origino, “origin” in Esperanto. An extrait de parfum built around a cocktail of musks by independent perfumer Vanina Muracciole. François Hénin, founder of the Jovoy perfumes and boutiques, saw in it the starting point of an entire olfactory world: “What was only meant to be a piece of olfactory exploration, a game between Vanina and me, would become the thread of a brand in its own right.” The perfumes all carry a name in Esperanto, the universal language, because the musk base of Origino runs through every one of them. Jeroboam’s secret? Deliberately taking apart the classic olfactory pyramid.

Jouissance perfumes at H Parfums, Montreal

Jouissance

by Cherry Cheng·7 references

Turning erotic literature into elegant perfume. Cherry Cheng, a London-based founder trained at Goldsmiths, created Jouissance during lockdown, out of a wish to escape and to compose fragrances inspired by the ecstatic experiences found only in the pages of women writers. The name comes from Hélène Cixous’s essay The Laugh of the Medusa, where the feminist critic reclaims the word jouissance to describe the explosive mental, spiritual and bodily experience of female pleasure. The perfumes draw on Anaïs Nin, Anne Desclos (Story of O) and Catherine Millet.

Jovoy

by François Hénin·19 references

The story of a rebirth. Founded in 1923 by Blanche Arvoy, an innovator, Jovoy Parfumeur Parisien first made its name with four distinctive perfumes, each presented in an animal-shaped bottle. Forgotten for more than 80 years, the brand owes its second life to François Hénin, a globe-trotter in love with beautiful raw materials, who relaunched it in 2010 after tracking ingredients down in the forests of Vietnam and the fields of Grasse. One thing not to confuse: Jovoy is both a perfume brand, the original creations of François Hénin, and a legendary boutique tucked between the Place Vendôme and the Tuileries Garden, where more than 150 niche brands can be discovered. Rarity, discovery and elegance are the soul of the house in both cases.

La Closerie des Parfums

by Valérie Madrid·14 references

It all starts in 1972, when the brothers Antoine and Hervé Madrid founded a first perfume workshop whose fragrances quickly found success abroad. Valérie Madrid, Hervé’s daughter and Antoine’s niece, grew up steeped in a world of vials and scents, between Paris and Bordeaux. Building on her own experience, she came back to her childhood dream and imagined La Closerie des Parfums while wandering through the Parisian gardens once known as closeries. “They are magical places dedicated to artistic expression.” Her creative principle: the meeting of a precious base, chosen among the essentials of French perfumery, with the spices of the world.

Liquides Imaginaires

by Philippe Di Méo·22 references

A French art house born in 2012, when the artistic sensibility of Philippe Di Méo met the flair of David Frossard around an installation exploring the sacred ancestry of perfume. The word perfume comes from the Latin per fumum, “through smoke”, the incense and resins burned during religious ceremonies. Philippe Di Méo imagines each fragrance as a story, a legend told in olfactory trilogies that call up emotions and memories. A house of world renown, awarded many times, whose creations are found at the greatest niche retailers around the world. Perfume, far from being a simple accessory, opens an unsuspected world. It captures states, desires and forces, and fixes a precious memory.

Lubin

Since 1798·21 references

Lubin is the second oldest independent French perfume house still in activity. Founded in 1798 by Pierre-François Lubin, a former apprentice of Jean-Louis Fargeon, the perfumer of Queen Marie-Antoinette. He supplied the Empress Josephine and Pauline Bonaparte, became a purveyor to the imperial court and then to the European elites, and the protection of the Duke of Angoulême, son of Charles X, allowed him to rename his shop Aux Armes de France. The house was taken over in 2004 by Gilles Thevenin, former creative director at Guerlain, with the support of Laurent Prot, the last family heir. Lubin makes its perfumes today in small batches in the Loire valley and distributes them in some thirty countries from its Paris boutique in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

The Grasse atelier employs around twenty people today and the house is distributed in more than 70 countries. A luxury that is worn as much as it is looked at.

Describing himself readily as “a more conceptual than expressionist artist”, he opens an unexpected territory with Manuel Mathieu Parfums, that of scent. Three perfumes launched at the Phi Centre in Montreal, after Paris and Copenhagen. “Each perfume is deeply personal. A sculptural and emotional gesture, rooted both in my intimate history and in a collective memory.” The bottles, shaped by hand from a clay mould, underline a commitment to craft and to individuality.

Nicolaï

by Patricia de Nicolaï·31 references

Born in Paris, Patricia de Nicolaï grew up in the Guerlain family mansion in the 17th arrondissement, among four generations of perfumers under one roof. She became a perfumer at a time when the profession was exclusively male, and she is the first woman to receive the International Prize for the best perfumer-creator, in 1988. The following year her husband Jean-Louis Michau suggested launching Nicolaï, one of the very first niche houses, created to put the perfumer back at the heart of creation. Settled near the Palais-Royal, she composes her perfumes on rue de Montpensier, a few steps from the gardens. “Being in Paris is a gift from heaven.” President of the Osmothèque, the international conservatory of perfumes in Versailles, since 2008, and decorated with the Legion of Honour, she is now passing the house on to her son Axel. More than 80 perfumes, eight Paris boutiques, one in London. And a single flacon carrying a pioneer’s signature as a watermark.

by Rania Jouaneh·12 references

Rania Jouaneh’s passion for essences comes from her childhood in the Middle East and Africa. As far back as she can remember, all her memories carry an olfactory imprint: the big jasmine tree she played under, the spice markets of the Middle East, the scents of the souks and bazaars of Africa. Great-granddaughter of a spice merchant, daughter of a father who took his family from Jordan to Morocco and then to France, she founded Rania J in 2012. Noble and rare essences, selected and harvested directly from producers and distillers who still work with traditional methods. She thinks of perfume as a piece of jewellery, worn as an accessory that defines you.
